Having Credit Cards got me into trouble 20+ years ago. Took care of the problem cut them up and swore off credit cards for life. Now not having credit cards is hurting my credit. My credit score is poor to fair depending on where you look. Mainly because my mother who just passed away a couple of years ago took care of my finances. I'm on disability and my check went into direct deposit with hers and our bills got paid out of the one big account. I didn't get a salary. My money just paid the bills. Except for the Doctor bills. Mom let them accumulate. After she passed I have worked hard to get everyone paid off. I have cleaned up most of them with the exception of 2. However all were medical bills. The credit bureau said it probably wouldn't go up much more. They want me to prove I know how to handle money by taking a high interest rate credit card. I know how to handle money and that is not to take a high interest rate credit card and continue to keep my doctors I have to see on a regular basis paid up and happy instead of getting behind again. I am looking for a low interest rate, no annual fee, no set-up fee, mainly to buy groceries, gas and things like that. Just to build my credit back up. I pay all of the bills with my check every month. My son and I live together and he takes care of his stuff and any left over bills. But because I can't explain this when applying it just looks plain bad when a credit card checks into my account. I feel so much better. At least maybe someone will read this and understand what I am looking for and why.

Hi Sue,

I understand why you don't want to open a credit card with a high interest rate, but it's important to remember that you will only pay interest if you carry a balance on your credit card. If you only use your credit card to make purchases that you know you can afford, like gas and groceries as you mentioned, then you won't pay a penny in interest no matter how high the interest rate is as long as you pay the balance off in full each month.

Credit cards, if used responsibly, can even become a source of extra income. I have not paid a penny on interest in 4 years of establishing credit and rotate my expenses between 11 of the best cash back credit cards in my wallet. Quicksilver, Discover It and UPromise are my favorites. Even saved by paying my auto loan with a 0% balance transfer. The "trick" is to pay EVERYTHING with them and pay them off monthly, except the ones that have a balance on a transfer (you would pay interests in purchases).

By: Prevailing To Success | Feb 7, 2018

I started with a secured card and used it making sure to pay it every month. this will allow your payment history to be reported every month to all three reporting agencies. after six months I was offered all types of cards, I now have 4 cards that I use very responsively.

I applied for Capitol One and was approved and then applied for a Credit One and was told that there were too many hits on my credit and it looked like fraudulent activity. I am just trying to establish credit. Is there a trick for how many times you can apply in a certain time frame so that it doesn't appear that way? Or when should I apply again for the Credit One? How soon is too soon?

Hi Penni,

There is no consistent rule as to how recent credit inquires card issuers will count as too many. If you are trying to build credit I would recommend focusing on making all of your payments on time with your new Capital One card. After a year or so of responsible use, your credit score should rise significantly and you'll easily be able to get approved for another credit card to continue building credit.

I believe in Fairness and capital one and credit one bank approved me for 2 cards. So that i can building my credit and be able to get a loan from a bank to lease or buy a house. I dont make much money but paying to live in a house beats anyway paying rent to something that's never gonna be yours.

Diana there are some cards for rebuilding credit. They do have a yearly fee and high interest but they do report to credit bureaus so helping your credit. I've used Surge, Total and First Premier Bank cards. Was satisfied with all of them. I'm now getting a Capital One card with lower interest and no fee.

Hi Joy,

The Chase Slate is certainly one of the best balance transfer credit cards. It offers 0% APR for the first 15 months on both new purchases and balance transfer as well as no annual fee and no balance transfer fee.

Credit Card Offers for Fair Credit

If you have fair credit, or have had some credit history dings or other problems but are not yet in the bad credit category, then you should be able to apply for and get an a credit card for fair credit. Those with bad credit generally have no choice but to apply for a secured or prepaid card, but in your case having average or fair credit qualifies you to be responsible for adhering to a credit limit and carrying a balance over from one month to the next if you decide to do that. That also means that you’ll have a great chance to improve your credit score and credit history – which will entitle you to even better rates, credit cards, and cardholder privileges.

It’s a good idea to shop for a good credit card with the most manageable fees and interest rates, because that will make it much easier for you to manage your budget and card payments. Cards with no annual fee, for example, are cheaper – and so are ones that have a lower APR. Use the info in the reviews in this section – and crunch the numbers using this site’s credit card calculators and other tools – to help you make a wise pick of the best credit cards for fair credit. FICO ranges for fair or average credit typically range from 620 to 680.

Try to use not more than 25-30% of your allowed limit each month, because that will look better on your credit report. Soon you may be offered a higher credit limit and as your credit score rises from fair to good it will be possible to shop for even more attractive and competitive interest rate card.

Disclaimer: FICO scores are used to represent the creditworthiness of a person and may be one indicator of the credit type you are eligible for. However, credit score alone does not guarantee or imply approval for any credit card product.

Reviews

" " Those who always pay their balances in full and on time will usually come out ahead.

" " The offers on the credit card landscape are constantly changing which is great news for consumers.

" " In the future, the companies that will thrive are those able to give customers exactly what they want, the way they want it, when they want it.
